Institute Awards

The IOR promotes achievement and innovation through a number of annual awards. Nominations are encouraged from individuals at all stages of their career. 

Practical contribution to the development of RAC technology

The Institute's J&E Hall Gold Medal is a world recognised award for individual for contribution to the development of refrigeration and air conditioning technology. It is awarded by J&E Hall International to the candidate considered by the Institute to be most worthy from submissions received that year. Jurgen Suss this years winner has been awarded the medal for his achievements in carbon dioxide compressor innovation. He has been instrumental in driving forward innovative work in the application of carbon dioxide technology to light commercial refrigeration. His work led to the development of a compressor with a matching control device which has become the industry standard for co2 equipment - the TN Compressor. This technology has achieved significant practical application in bottle coolers, vending machines, display cases and high efficiency domestic hot water heat pumps.

Student Research (Ted Perry Award)

To encourage and promote research by students related to refrigeration and air condition an award of £500 is made sponsored by SKM Enviros and a prize of a set of ASHRAE Databooks is donated to the winner in honor of the Past President Ted Perry by his family. 

The winner was Ina Colombo of London South Bank University, a student whose work in the field of sustainable refrigeration in retail applications will help the industry to gain a better understand of the environmental and economic impact of using carbon dioxide refrigeration in supermarkets. Her research focuses on the development of a practical, low cost and low carbon solution for retail applications using carbon dioxide with heat recovery.

Published Research presented to IOR Members (Kenneth Lightfoot Medal)

The Institute provides a prize of £500 and a Medal to for the best paper presented in our programme of free evening lectures which are published in the Annual IOR Proceedings.  The award is sponsored by Lightfoot Defence in honor of the Past President of the Institute, Kenneth Lightfoot. Service Engineer Lifetime Achievement recognition

The IOR Service Engineers Section makes a lifetime achievement award to recognise an individual's commitment  to a career in service, maintenance or installation engineering.  The award is sponsored by the IOR Centenary Fund for Education and Training.  For information about the SES and joining follow this link.

David Wright of MacWhirter Ltd won the award this year (2010).In total Dave can boast over 50 years in this industry. Over this time he has made a recognisable contribution not just to his employer but to the technical development of less experienced colleagues, yet he remains in a very much in a hands-on role as Service and Project Manager in Cardiff. As well as continuing to provide a productive contribution to the company, his continual professional training to all grades of engineers via his periodical “MacTechnical” Newsletters is an invaluable tool for all.
