Paper 1 The Challenges of Heat Pumps for Domestic Heating

Christopher Parker of WAVE Refrigeration.

The UK Government has declared an ambitious national target of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To achieve the aim, every energy-consuming sector must embrace innovation, and cultural change to minimise their environmental impact and make Net Zero a reality. In 2022 32% of all the UK’s natural gas consumption was used by domestic dwellings for heating and cooking and accounted for two-thirds of all domestic energy consumption in the same period as a combustible energy source. In the domestic market alone, 56.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions were emitted from the use of natural gas, accounting for 17% of the nations’ emissions. Alternative energy sources are in an array of different technology readiness levels and a range of challenges persist that prevent the uptake of alternative technology. This paper focuses on heat pump technology and its relevant challenges within the domestic market.

Paper 2:  Heat Networks in Rural Areas – The Swaffham Prior Project

Dylan Betts, Design Engineer at Equans UK

Focusing on the Swaffham Prior heat network project, this talk will portray the challenges and opportunities associated with rural heat networks. The talk covers the inception and early stages of the project, including the early feasibility and planning details and a review of necessary statutory policies of which strict adherence was required. Moving onto the North Angle solar farm, a 7.5MW solar farm which supplies 95% of the required electricity for the Swaffham Prior energy centre. The main portion of the talk will focus evenly between the Heat Pumps selected for use in Swaffham Prior, and the connective grid and in-house installations which allow for the 300 properties to be decarbonise across the village.
